Cahors
A geographic study was made of the 45 municipalities that make up the Cahors region. This study determined that it consisted of the following 3 terroirs:
– Terroirs bearing alluvial soil :
This zone is comprised of 3 main terraces, which make up the Lot valley’s terroirs. The first terrace is composed of sand and clay, the second of silt and the third of gravel-laden slopes of fragmented limestone. The third terrace presents prime conditions for cultivating grapes.
– Terroirs of limestone slopes :
The Cahors terroir has slopes that are rarely cultivated due to their very steep inclination.
– Terroirs of limestone plateaus :
This zone is comprised of limestone plateaus, whose altitude is between 250 and 350 meters (approximately 820 – 1,148 feet). The soil is shallow and rich in limestone.
THE TERROIRS OF
Château Les Croisille
The wine-producing estate is located on the limestone plateaus in the countryside surrounding the town of Luzech. This terroir is unique due to the fact that its limestone soil reveals traces of iron (Siderolithic).
These deposits vary in concentration throughout our soil and we design our collection of wines according to its pronounced characteristics.
A portion of our vineyard is located in the Luzech Valley, on the gravelly soil of the second terrace. Another superb, 3.5-hectare parcel (approximately 8.6 acres) is located on the third terrace, which also exhibits rocky soil.
THE FAMOUS MALBEC
Our Varietal
Malbec (originally called Cot or Auxerrois in Cahors) was introduced to the Quercy area over 2,000 years ago. Today, it is known internationally as one of the world’s most interesting varietals. The deep, inky colored wines – known as vins noirs – produced in Cahors, the birthplace of Malbec, exhibit its distinctive varietal character with perfection. This wine is prized for its rich, powerful flavors, velvety tannins and natural acidity, which imparts the wine with considerable freshness and vivacity. Moreover Malbec is versatile and can also be used to produce light, fruity and easily digestible wines. Today, this style of varietal expression is budding a revival of Cahors wines.
